Description

Sweet spot right off of the interstate. You literally turn off of the interstate onto a gated dirt road, open the gate, be sure to close it behind you, and follow the roads north for about a mile. It is to the north of the interstate so if coming eastbound you will be turning to the left where there is a dirt road over to the other side. There are a few spots at the entrance to the canyon, a large slot canyon you can drive down (high clearance, possibly 4x4), you can’t camp in the canyon. We opted to camp out near a group of trees with a lovely view of the formations. There are pictographs on some of the canyon walls. Great little spot. Clean up after yourself, bury toilet paper.

Latest Check-Ins

Likely need high clearance vehicle. Many camping options right up the canyon entrance about 2 miles in.

Great area with about 6 nice spots to choose from. There's a bid area nearest to the highway with space for 4 or 5 big rigs. Smaller sites further back for vans. High clearance is helpful to get over the first wash. Dry when we were there, but still a steep spot to pass. A couple small petroglyphs in the canyon. We stayed close to the canyon entrance and couldn't hear the highway at all. perfect silence and amazing scenery.

This area us inaccessible for liw clearance 2wd vehicle. I felt lucky I was able to turn around before hitting the first wash right near the interstate and there are multiple washes. The banks if the wash were very high and a guaranteed way to destroy anything that does not have high clearance. Also the bottom of the wash was soggy quick sand like and it was way after last rain, Id gave gotten stuck there. Could not get far in small motorhome, despite false statements by some including me being told by BLM office the road is ok for motorhomes, it is definiteltly not.

Gem of a site located right off I70. It’s on the north side of the highway, exit at mile marker 147, if you are heading East bound there is a dirt median you can use to cross over to the N side and get on the dirt road to this site. If you’re heading west, keep your eyes out, it’s a dirt road right past a hill and mile marker 147. There’s a gate to open, remember to close it behind you. After you cross the wash, you’ll see a trail on the right, this leads to a few camp sites, and most have some trees for shade. In early September we had a warm afternoon but it cooled off nicely for sleeping. Minimal bugs, lots of bats to watch flying over you at dusk. With calm wind there’s a faint sound of highway noise but not bad. One other person spent the night here, but we couldn’t even see them from our site.

Go explore black dragon canyon and check out the pictorgraphs! Don’t leave your own modern graffiti though.

Would definitely stop here again.

Might need 4wd to cross the wash, or just good driving skills. Definitely would need 4wd if it gets wet.

Like the first person said, if you're driving westbound then don't follow the Google maps route. Continue on I-70 till you're near the pin on your right and begin looking for the road. Found it with little trouble in the dark. Lots of spots to be had.

Nice area. You'll need a high clearance and possibly 4wd to get to the actual spot marked here, as you have to drive into and then out of a wash to get to it. But there are several other spots along the road easily accessible by larger rigs. We found a good spot in our 26ft class c. You can hear road noise but it's not bad. No cell service.
Google maps tried to get us here via a crazy detour / driving under the freeway on a wash! You can just exit the freeway directly onto the dirt road. The gate was open when we came so we left it open.

The turn off the north side of the I-70 (westbound) is easy to spot if you know it’s there. Close the gate behind you. As you drive north down the road there are a few easy to access sites. We camped in the mouth of Black Dragon Canyon. The rock art in the canyon is stunning yet has been vandalized as most like it have. Please respect this place and pack out your trash.

Great place to pull off and spend the night. Pit toilets and beautiful scenery. Only 1 other person and very quiet
