I was on a solo bike tour from Ecuador to Ushuaia. On today’s ride, there was free camping at the Mirador (16.1 km, S21.35908 W68.02614). I saw no other official camp area, but the wild country after 21.6 km offered many places. I had intended continuing to Laguna Hedionda, but when I arrived at Laguna Cañapa I was so enchanted with the beauty of the place that I decided to wild camp there. No camping was allowed near the Laguna. The local guard said I could camp about 1 km to the west, in front of a ridge. There was a smooth sandy space for 1 tent, which was flat enough. This faced E with good views so it would catch the early morning sun (which it did, at 07h10 the next day). No charge to camp.
Today I wild camped at 36.9 km. Turnoff from the laguna's main gravel road was at about 36.4 km onto gravel track up a slope on right. I stayed here for 1 night.
I much enjoyed this wild camp. Pros: I had it all to myself. I awoke to the soft light over the mountaintops and the Laguna. I felt completely at peace with the world in this scenic place. Cons: ground was a little sloping.
Water: The Mirador (16.1 km) had meals, drinks and water for sale, at high prices. I stopped here for a 2-course vegetarian lunch (35 BOB). Drinks were extra. Thereafter I saw no services. Today I saw no potable surface water. One could ask jeeps for water, which I did once. Later another offered me water which I accepted. Guests also gave me snacks and some fruit.
