Description

An amazing 18nth century Jesuit mission established as part of one the the original settlements of the El Camino Real. We traveled many years ago to this location from the dirt road leading from Hwy 1 south of the town of Mulege. At the time the dirt road was passable by 2wd but was very rough and required decent clearance. Set at the base of a deep canyon with a fresh water stream, the two settlements of San MIguel de Comondu and San Jose de Comondu are amazing villages to visit.

Beautiful grounds and the town is lovely. Locals were all staring as I drove in, so I thought I was going the wrong way for a bit, but everyone I encountered was very friendly.

I came from the south (Francisco Villa). Road is paved but the last couple KM through the village are dirt road. Fine for 2WD, just bumpy.

Beautiful, green and friendly Oasis in a Canyon in the middle of the desert. Church was closed when we arrived in the evening. You can buy fresh mild goat cheese at the door right of the "Tienda Comunitario". Coming from Loreto the last 20 km of this Road to San Jose de Comundo are strenous and rocky. High Clearance and 4x4 needed. The rough desert with its fields of boulders is beautiful. From Loreto to San Jose you will need around 5-6 hours, last 42 km is dirt road.
The altitude of this place is not 3.937ft, it should be under 1.000ft.
