Passed through here yesterday in pouring rain and stopped by police for going over the double yellow lines. After checking my documents they came back and asked for my passport. Came back 10mins later to say I would have to pay a fine for my ‘infraction’ - they wanted 1,000,000 pesos or US$250. I told them I had no cash, they said they’d hold on to my passport and documents until I went to an ATM in Santa Marta. Of course I refused. I said I would go with them to the police station in Santa Marta, but they refused. There were regular police and traffic police there. Standoff lasted about an hour and 15mins before they gave me back my documents and passport. Saw other drivers stopped definitely paying them off to be allowed to go onwards.

Driving through on a Friday evening. We passed some slow trucks and the police pulled us over. The official had a translator and tried to get us to pay the minimum salary of an average worker. We explained there were broken lines in the road where we passed the trucks. He said we’d have to pay the fine when we exited the country. Will update if that’s the case in a few weeks...
