Description

Here you can cross with your vehicle, but most famously it's the place where many US and Canadian citizens cross on foot to get cheap but excellent dental treatment in Mexico. There is a car park immediately at the border to leave your vehicle. No controls exiting USA or arriving in Mexico on foot. There are also no controls leaving Mexico into USA, but entering USA has the full entry checks. Peak season is when the snowbirds are down. Queues to get into USA in the afternoon can be several hours. For overlanders without dental insurance in USA, this is a great option to get good treatment at an affordable price.

Super easy crossing on a Saturday around 8:30am. It was even smaller than I thought. They basically had us parked in the middle of the street. One officer got in the van and did no more than a 1 minute inspection of the inside - didn’t open anything. The other guy asked us if we needed FMM and had 1 of us take both passports to his office. He said the credit card machine wasn’t working so I had to pay cash. I was able to pay in US dollars. Between crossing and the paperwork, it took maybe 15-20 minutes.

I've been wanting to come here for many years. I finally made it. I was excited until I got bombarded and practically accosted by people selling things and begging for me to go to their dentist and even pulling my arm at times. I understand the competition is fierce and people are trying to get my business and people are trying to make money but being a 1st time solo female this was a little much for me. You can only be polite and say no thank you so many times before it gets to be very annoying. I couldn't look at the things that I wanted to look at, I didn't go have a beer at the bar as I had planned, and I didn't get to investigate the different Dental options on my own because I was being pressured at every turn.
I've wanted to get my dental work done here because of all the good information that my research has discovered plus I drove my 86' suburban here from Alabama thinking I'd drive to Oaxaca and retire. Now I'm parked at the Q casino making life decisions.

This is a great crossing if you’re in a van or smaller rig. We were able to park just after the border, in a Sprinter and a Chevy Express, get a quick search and our FMMs in about 15 minutes. You need exact change in pesos for the FMM and there are no banks in town so be aware of that. Currently it’s 637pesos. We crossed and used the HSBC ATM in town. Be aware it gives out pesos but charges your card in USD and the exchange is awful. I would get just enough cash and use an ATM further south.

Mexico—>USA
Got in line just after 6pm and we were through before 7pm. No checks leaving Mexico only checked entering USA. Quick and pretty painless. When it was our turn we showed our passports and had the car inspected by a dog. It seemed like our inspection took the longest of anyone ahead of us in line and it was still only like 5-10 minutes. The dog sniffed around the outside and then got in the back of the car to sniff. We answered questions about our travel while the dog inspected, where have you been?, are you bringing anything back?, where are you going? etc. . . Guards were polite and professional. They are mainly looking for weed/coke and weapons. We did not, but we easily could have brought some fresh fruits and veg in here. Don’t know if we came through on an easy day or something, but we were prepared for the worst and we’re happily surprised it was this easy. Traveling in 2000 chrysler minivan that could easily be classified as a “hippy van”

My suggestion is just to be polite and don’t try to smuggle anything in and you should have a pretty easy time.

Friendly boarder guards and military. 10 min check, looked through a few cabinets in our 1968 17ft trailer and the back of our 2008 Toyota SUV. let us go to the HSBC ATM at the liquor store around the corner as he didn't have credit card payment available. ** bring cash, atm charges 70pesos. ** 594 Mexican peso per person, no change on hand, needs exact change, won't accept USD.

We're French. In Mexico for nearly 6 months, we went to Tecate, Tijuana and here to cross to the US but they refused. said we might on June, 21st but before that, it's not possible for foreigners to enter the US by land.
Tijuana and Tecate Mexican migration refused to renew our visa for six months but here, the officer did it in 30 minutes even though we had 8 days left on our visa.
