Nur Zholy border crossing | Customs and Immigration

We arrived at the border at 7:30 am Kazahk time. We were told the border opened at 8am (11am Beijing time). At 8:15 we were allowed through and waited in another spot for the bus to come. We were allowed to cycle, but didn't wait arround to be told otherwise. On the Chinese side, we headed over to the large archway building up the ramp on the left for customs. We were through by 9:30 Kazakh time.

Relatively straightforwar to cross on a bicycle. They let you cycle from one checkpoint to the next. Quite long lines on the chinese side. Very thorough check of my bike bags but always friendly.

We could cycle over the border without problems from Kazakhstan to China, on China side we had to put our panniers on two different scanners but without problems (no knives or petrol being taken away). We heard from others that coming from China bus company employees at the gate try to convince you you have to take a bus; this is NOT true, you just have to fight your way through the bus people.

Went fast ! Kazakh soldiers were super nice ! At chinese side they ask me what was my plan and the countries i’ve been trough the past years ! They let me pass after that !

Since late 2018, the former Khorgos border crossing is no longer active and now only functions as a Special Economic Zone with discount shopping and tacky tourist attractions. The new border is called Nur Zholy and lies a few kilometers south of Khorgos. It is not yet marked on the map: follow the main new highway from Almaty and you will get there.

The border opens at 10.30 Beijing time, it opens every day.
