Description

To the left of the lighthouse on the super quiet beach. Beyond this beach are also several narrow parking spots and a pullout, with close access to rocky tidepools.

Between the lighthouse and an apartment complex are a few narrow parking spots and a decent-sized packed sand pullout. We parked in the pullout for maybe 4 days but it's right next to a brown swamp with crocodiles (I think they're alligators, but the sign says crocs - who knows). We know they stalk their prey, so we didn't want to risk it, especially with our appetizing little dog. So we moved next to the lighthouse (see review there). For the spot itself, it was super breezy the entire time we were here and that kept us very cool. Gorgeous, shallow water with better snorkeling than the malecon. Police drove by at night, but didn't say anything to us. Locals come for fishing, snorkeling, camping, etc. The biggest negative is all the trash. We did several beach cleanups, but the people who come here have no respect for keeping it clean - it's almost like a game how messy they can leave it. The trash bags we collected were picked up weekly. We'll never drink Barrilito bottles again! Note: we were here quarantining during the coronavirus, so the town was pretty quiet. No cruise ships, way less people. YMMV.

We spent 3 nights in the parking lot right north of the lighthouse and then moved +/- 500 m further north for 2 more nights. Second place is very quiet. None has a real sand beach but there is a sand area (free access) on the other side of the lighthouse. We had very nice snorkeling from the shore as you quickly get to the coral reef. If you go past the reef, it gets great with dozens of different colored fishes, big rays and sometimes turtles. We also enjoyed riding the malecon and further by bike and even had a fire. No mosquitos when we were there but lots of seagrass that came with a terrible smell in some areas (but not in the camping spots). Cool, safe and free spot ! Telcel 4G.

It's quite a nice place to stay, a little bit further from the lighthouse than a parking lot. Police stopped and asked if everything is OK around 11 PM, they also asked us to be clean: no trash, no toilet. Local guys were here with a loud music until 9.30 PM.

Much cleaner now, only some beer bootles. Some locals in the evening, otherwise quiet in the night. Great place to camp free, right on the beach. Not so much mosquitos in november.

Report Check-In

In November we didn't have a problem with mosquitos. Easy enough walk down the sidewalk to Mahahual, a fun little town. Tons of trash, unfortunately. We picked some up but then watched as taxi drivers tossed their soda bottles onto the beach, despite plenty of garbage cans. So that's a bummer. Otherwise, free!

Quiet but full of trash. Its more than a dump place than a boon-docking place. Full of mosquitoes. Its next to a swamp. Great view of Caribbean though.

Report Check-In

In the parking lot of the lighthouse (left). Quiet and directly on the beach. We can swim from there to see the corral reef.
