Description

This is the car parking near the Rainbow Mountain. If you walk up to the mountain it will take around 1h. We also went to the Valle Rojo, that is very worthwhile, actually we thought it was nicer than the Rainbow Mountain walk. With the Valle Rojo, our total walking was around 3h. We started at 13:00 and the tours were going down. We had few people up in the Rainbow Mountain and none at Valle Rojo walking. When we came back also Tainbow Mountain was empty, not even the guys that charge the entrance. We only saw 2 locals doing the crossing back to their village. It was around 16:00, it is time to do Rainbow Mountain for free! We didn't have to pay entrance at Valle Rojo, no one was there. We slept in the parking after the walking, amazing view in the morning, but not really good sleep due the altitude of 4.800m. Remember that you only have to pay 10 soles pp. We were 2 and paid 10 in the first parking lot down and then 10 when you are almost in the top. Keep the receipt! They tried to charge us a third time!

Latest Check-Ins

We camped here. Other than an occasional barking dog it was a peaceful night. Completely by ourselves.

We hiked the mountain the next morning. Left the car at 7:15 and we’re back at 10am. A 2.8 mile round trip.

With navigation apps it was not possible to get to the indicated location. Instead we were sent to a parallel road on the right that lead to a big parking area with tents and toilets, 45min walk from the top. Created a new location for this.

Drove up to this place with our campervan (3.5 ton, 6m long, 2WD). The road is in good condition.
However, in some parts it is basically just one lane and very close to cliff face. Need to maneuver carefully. Enjoy!

Nice big flat parking area and place for tents, there is a toilet. We woke up around 6 and started hiking around 7.30. And there was noone except a few people going up by motorbike. Seems there is noone to colect money for the Rainbow mountain that early.

So after the big "P" on the map, you drive until here. A bit before there's a local selling you the rainbow mountain tickets, now 20 Soles per person. No extra fees to be paid when arriving at this parking lot, or on the mountain itself. We found the rainbow mountain itself a bit disappointing, but the scenery very rewarding.
