Free Primitive campground managed by NFS. The access is near Heise Hot Springs. Google the hot springs to get into Heise Rd. After passing the hot springs you will see a sign to a gravel road that shows Kelly’s island campground and Wolf Flat. Kelly’s Island is a campground with fee. If you continue on the road you will find Wolf Flats. Several places, some by the snake river, private with a lot of shade. Near campsites "W" there is an outhouse. No outhouse in the “S” camping spots. Check the map at the entrance so you can see where the “S” and “W” campsites are. The campground does NOT have access through HW 20.
Why? By checking in after you’ve visited a place you let others know this place is still functional. You can also add or correct any information.
Excellent spot. Peaceful right by the river. There a few spots along this road and you can choose one. Great night sleep. Just down the way are the hot springs. Great small town vibe.
Report Check-InPocket of BLM land by the river (not NFS as someone wrote below; you can find it on the BLM map). There are a bunch of designated sites all along this road for a few miles, though they are mostly clustered near the point marked here. There are two small loops that each has a pit toilet and a few sites around it. A few sites have direct river access but most do not. We stayed one night here but did not like the vibes very much -- a lot of trash and a bunch of perma-campers with ATVs zooming around. Sites were also pretty muddy as it had just rained a ton. Verizon cell service came and went; Starlink was partially obstructed but we got a good enough signal to send some messages by facing it straight up. Would do an overnight again if necessary but wouldn't stay for more than that. I did get to see a rare (and giant) Western Tiger Salamander here so that was cool :)
(we use to report on cell service for people trying to work off grid; IG: @pampas.overland)
Report Check-InPrimitive site, didn't see a map but we have a prime site above the Snake River. The gravel road has washboards and a little traffic. Someone is shooting above us.
Report Check-InThis was perfect! I drove to see most sights before I picked the first one as it was the closest to the river! Minus people just walking right into my camp space when there are plenty of other access points to the river, my dog and I loved the break from our cross country drive! I do think locals frequently go here and I picked up some of the trash left behind! Can here noise but at night it quiets down!
Report Check-InStayed here one night. It’s beautiful and the traffic calmed down after dark. People SPEED down the main road though. Dirt road but smooth and pretty easy. The canyon is absolutely gorgeous.
Report Check-InLots of turn offs in Wild Flats to camp! I went a little farther down the dirt road to find a big pull off loop with established fire pits. A little bit of road traffic because it’s right by a river put in. Gorgeous views of the river on the way in!
Report Check-InOne night stop over on our way leaving Tetons. Quiet with a few other campers over by the restroom.
Report Check-InLots of camp sites to choose from. There is road noise from the highway, at least in the site we chose.
Report Check-InI'm quite a bit up the road from where this current location is marked as "Wolf Flats", but I'm right near the entrance of the place. Minus a few miles of bumpy dirt road coming in (even then, I've experienced worse bumpy roads) it's a great spot all around and can't believe it's free! I showed up on a Monday evening and lots of spots open. Got one right by the river, decent privacy and fire ring. I have 1-2 bars of ATT coverage but was able to stream a show just fine. Has been quiet for the most part all night.
