Epic place above Wapta Falls! 51.18231, -116.58110

Stayed here two nights after crossing the La Mesilla border. 2 people and a dog. Q20 pp per night. Eric was very kind. He was fine with our small dog running around the property off leash.

Shower is cold with lots of pressure, more like a hose opening. There’s a pool but after getting in for a split second, I decided it would be better not to use. Got a lot greener the next day.

Brought a starlink and had ok reception with some obstruction when placed in the soccer field. (Needed to work)

This place could be really nice as it had a cave and small walking trails through the hills, but there is trash everywhere. All kinds of trash in every single spot. Every trashcan I saw was overflowing and knocked down. I hope they manage to clean up at some point. It blew my mind that they were okay living among that.

It is a very big ranch with more than 70 camping places, in the shade or in the sun. It's perfect for being quiet. The owners, Susy and Nacho are very helpful and accommodating; the family that runs the ranch, Luis and Jazmin are also very caring and offered me organic fruits from the ranch. In 15 minutes walk you can go to the sacred site of Wixarika natives and you can also see magnificent petroglyphs. From the ranch you can also descend into the canyon and walk along the river to the thermal baths. There are toilets and a shower with hot water in the ranch. A spectacular view of the ocean and the sunset. No Wifi but good Telcel reception. The night costs 300 pesos negotiable. I spent 10 extraordinary days, far from the tumult of civilization, surrounded by turkeys, rabbits, ducks, chickens, dogs, horses and donkeys. All these beautiful people live in freedom and in harmony.

Basic hotel behind petrol station, 50,000 cop for a double room, ground floor so we could bring the bikes in. A bit loud wort the trucks coming and going but we’re getting used to ‘loud’ everything in Colombia !

Here is an overview of the whole process with TMC.

1. Get a reservation. Know your vehicle lenght in meters. There is an office in the city and it takes just minutes. Super friendly lady.
2. Come to the port. At the gate say you have a ferry with TMC.
3. Turn right and go through the inspection. They will check your TIP and verify the passport of the person on the TIP. You don't need any copies or other documents. They will check the car for weapons or drugs. Did not ask about food. Overall super friendly.
4. Drive forward to the scale ( can't miss it). Pay the port fee and get a slip with your car weight and length. They will ask your name, age, car year.
5. Get off the scale and park immediately to your right.
6. Go back towards the inspection point and on your way you will see the TMC ticket office.
7. Hand them over your slip and tell them you have a reservation. Write on a piece of paper your name and age + any passengers. Get your tickets.
8. Find you ship. The name of the ship is clearly visible on the food stamps.
9. Wait near the ship. The trucks will board first and the whole boarding process take hours. It won't hurt to tell the attendants you wish to stay on the upper deck.
10. I don't think you can call any part of the ship a good spot. A significant number of trucks leave their engine running all night. So there is constant noise and fumes. :/ The sea breeze during our trip was almost inexistent.
11. Enjoy the experience. Some of the staff on the boat speak English and are super friendly.

Spent 3 nights here. Q50/night. Safe, quiet (church close by can be loud but never after 8/9PM). Lots are covered in case of rain. Max height might be around 2.70m. Access through some narrow and steep streets. Perfect location to visit the town and to jump in the lanchas to visit towns around the lake. Showers + WC

This place is amazing. 15$ (self-pay station) for a night near a lovely stream AND is has clean bathrooms with showers. It was busy on a Saturday, but got very empty towards Sunday afternoon. As previously said, careful if the weather’s supposed to be bad since you can get stuck there.

Still nice here. No mosquitoes and we haven’t seen a bear here. There was no one else around. Very private.
We got stuck with our 4WD because there was still 2 feet of snow between the entrance of site 13 and the lake. Fortunately we had a shovel and shovelled our way out and a little bit more. Should be easy to go through now for you guys if you have a 4WD SUV. If you have a 2WD make sure to clear the snow a little bit more to not get stuck.
Camp site itself is still easy to access even with a RV.

Instead of parking here check out the old campground on iOverlander just 10 minutes north. Nice views there and very private :-)

We stayed for 2 nights at the first place to the left (RESTAURANTE MIRADOR DE VELERO on google maps). The owner, Brian told us we can stay for free if we eat dinner in the restaurant. We ate once, was very good and stayed for 2 nights.

Love staying here! So peaceful and quiet, though wind can be fierce! Road is smooth except a couple hefty rocks - just rattle your home a little.

Wonderful place, beautiful area. You can camp or rent a bed in the cabana or the whole one. There is a small shop around the corner but for more shopping you need to go to town.
The equipment in the kitchen is quite basic.

The rest area itself is okay, so are the toilets. But there are people living in the rest area kind of permanently, one woman just under the trees without a tent, some others in cars or a broken down RV. Some of them clearly on drugs, others drinking in the parking lot and acting strange. We didn’t end up staying there, just didn’t feel safe.

Amazing campsite right on the rim of Dark Canyon, at the east end of the old Dark Canyon Airstrip. Great views to the west as well towards the Henry Mtns. Pretty easy access off of the Woodenshoe Road. Lots of flat camping spots as well. No cell service.
