Canadian River | One of the worst overnight spots! Road noise all night. Loads of flies from the neighboring farm. Very trashed
Guler-Mt Adams County Campground | Great little place right in town. Water and electric or dry sites. Trees and well spaced apart. $8-$10 only. Good AT&T signal but no Verizon. |
FS - Martin City | Off the gravel road to the Hungry Horse reservoir. Nice spot by locked gate. Stayed 3 nights as easy access to Glacier NP. Can be a bit dusty. Can accommodate large or small RV or tent. No AT&T or Verizon signal. |
Butte Walmart | Lots of RVs in parking lot closest to the Auto Center. Reasonably quiet. |
Box canyon - USFS | Fabulous spot overlooking the river. Several wild camping options. Some require high clearance to access. Saw Osprey and Marmot. Plenty of shade. Hiking trail or walking along the forest roads is great. A bit busy over the weekend, but not bad. Quiet and totally dark at night. Pretty good AT&T and Verizon signal. |
Teton Dam Failure Site | Parking lot overlooking the failed Teton Dam. (Happened 44 years ago.) Nice river views. Few people. No signs prohibiting overnight stay. Good AT&T and Verizon signal. A bit windy. No shade. |
Teton Dam Site | This is not the right location. It’s a bit further north. Check the other wild camping site for correct coordinates. |
Dan’s Land | Private property that’s available for campers at no cost. No fires. No wood gathering. On top of a summit with nice views both ways. Just off the road. Can accommodate a few campers. Ok for smaller rigs. Perfect for vans. Good AT&T signal. |
Chipmunk Wild Camp | One of many wild camping sites in the National Forest along this road. This spot is great for a smaller RV and great for vans. Flat and quite protected from the wind. Has two cute resident chipmunks. Great AT&T signal. |
Washington Irving Cove South-Corps of Engineers-Keystone lake | Partially OPEN! So sad! About 2/3 of the camp is closed due to flood damage. Beautiful place along the lake. Nice overnight spot. Have to make reservations online via recreation.gov as with all COE campgrounds right now during this COVID-19 pandemic. |
McNair Campground COE | Beautiful campground on the lake. Well kept with trees, grass, and short hike to watch the sunset. Lots of birds. A bit of road noise. $18 per site. Half off for pensioners with Gold/Life card. |
Three Rivers Campground | Great place to spend a few days! Come prepared with food and stay a while. The hikes are enjoyable and not too strenuous albeit at 7,000ft plus. Nights are blissfully quiet. Decent AT&T signal which was a total surprise. |
Hill Top Vistas | Past the beware steep terrain sign still on good road there is a beautiful flat spot on the nose of the ridge. A bit windy but amazing vistas in all directions. Great AT&T signal |
Ft Stanton, Snowy River Cave, BLM | If you drive passed the camp found you can find flat spots off the road to spend a very quiet night. |
Along the River Campground | Nice place when you need full hook ups for a night. Sites are close together and near the road. A bit pricey at $42. There is plenty of boondocking or wild camping in the area... again good spot if you need the amenities. No AT&T service. But good WiFi. |
Stonewall Jackson Camp | Nice spot by creek. Must be busy at times as it has baseball fields. We were there during a flood so parked on road. Very quiet night.
Randolph Rampy Campground FREE | Nice little spot for a stopover. Didn’t trust the power point. No shade so good for solar. Right next to ball park and community center. |
Savoy Motors | A follow up on our review: On shredding a tire up in DeHell we discovered a problem with our side shaft. On returning to our mechanic in Pietermarizburg, several 1000ks later, we discovered that Savoy had used an incorrect part that could have caused us a lot of problems! |
Battlefields Country Lodge | Still ZAR100pppn. Nice place as said before. However, if you like quiet the fan from the cafe is rather loud as is the road noise ☹️. |
Potholes | Road between border and Piet Retief atrocious. Tar and full of deep potholes. Eswatini side good road and beautiful drive. |
Ndlovu Camp (Royal Hlane National Park) | Super disappointed! The waterhole by the camp is empty! Supposedly to dig it deeper. Did see rhino and impala, but missed the hippo and birds. Hopefully it will be all good again soon. |
Kiaat Campsite | Stayed here several times now. Peggy always welcoming. She turned 90 this past Monday! Still ZAR200 for 2ppn. Good MTN signal. Place very well kept up. Easy access to Kruger NP via Phabeni Gate only a few kilo away. We’ll definitely be back when in the area. |
Platjan Border | Still an easy border post. Staff friendly. |
Limpopo River Lodge | What an amazing spot to spend a night! Quiet except for wild sounds. Heard hyena, jackal and more. Tracks of all kinds from small to large. Watched vervets raid the weaver nests across the river 😢 price now ZAR195pppn a bit steep. Watch for geckos in the toilets. That’s in the fixture you sit down on. |
Planet Baobab | Nice stopover. Loved the boababs! Few lights so decent star viewing. Paid Pula110pppn. |
Goba Lodge | Same as before except we only paid N$160 for the 2 of us. |
Kalahari Monate Lodge | Great stopover. Shade and a few sites with grass. Sadly some genetically altered Springbok live with the sheep in adjacent field. Slow but usable MTN signal. |
Oom Benna's | Stopped by but didn’t stay. No MTN signal. Windy and no shade to speak of. Instead we moved on north to Kenhardt and camped at Elma’s B&B and camping. In the middle of town. Was surprisingly quiet. No wind and shade with good signal. Elma is very friendly and helpful. She only asks for a donation... we paid what we typically do ZAR 200 for the 2 of us. |
Supa Quick Tire | Great place to get tires fast. They had to bring in what we needed ... BF Goodridge KO2s ... after we shredded one driving the Swartberg. |
Elma’s B&B and camping | In the heart of this small town Elma offers camping to one or two travelers. Literally only space for about two vehicles with RTT and one ground tent. There is one toilet and shower room. Power went out and water too during our stay. However, Elma provided water buckets and lamps. She only asks for a donation and has no set price. We paid what we usually do ZAR200 for the two of us and our Landy with rooftop. No info on B&B. |
