March 22nd, 2021 Al-Nusra Restaurant

Wonderful restaurant with a large menu, everything from pizza to curries, stews, burgers, pasta, middle eastern and Ethiopian food. We had curry, and it was delicious. Take away and sit in, with a nice upstairs area with tables, seems very popular with locals. Large portions, and the food was absolutely delicious. Prices were very reasonable, we paid 1600 kes for an enormous dinner for two (we're cyclists, so probably would have fed three 'normal' people), including a big starter, main course, desert, and multiple drinks. Great place, highly recommended!

March 12th, 2021 Police Checkpoint

As of March 2021 there are government operations underway in the area to the north of Loruk, as well as the Eastern shore of Lake Baringo on the road from Loruk up to Laikipia (Maralal). They are trying to clear up bandit activity and as such the area is currently not safe - if heading up to Laikipia, take the road running between Lakes Baringo and Bogoria instead.

February 22nd, 2021 Bamboo Garden

Nice Lodge on the edge of the forest. Bandas with double bed and ensuite available for 2000, we camped in the garden for 500 pppn, an extra 500 if you want breakfast. Quiet at night (although it might not be on a Saturday night) and showers were hot. There's a restaurant and bar, very tasty food. Nice place, would recommend!

February 5th, 2021 Nimbus Resort & Campsite

Lovely place with spectacular views out over the Rift Valley. This is a very new place still under development, for now just camping but rooms will be coming soon. There's also a bar with cold beer available, and food can be ordered. Lovely place, lovely people, highly recommended! 500 pppn.

February 2nd, 2021 Equator Green Gardens & Resort

Really lovely place right on the equator. Very nice ensuite rooms available for 1000pppn, camping 500pppn. Food can be ordered, and there's a great bar whchh even has Guinness stocked. The owner is also super friendly and helpful, we highly recommend this place!

August 9th, 2020 Cyclists paradise

Amazing area, plenty of places to wild camp in the trees, hidden from sight. Just have a look around a pick your spot. There is a toilet and running water next to the small footbridge over the river, and there are plenty of benches around. Lovely place to camp, or even just to spend an afternoon in the sun.

August 8th, 2020 Hidden gravel area

Big flat gravel area under some very impressive cliffs and completely hidden from the road. There is a barrier so cars/vans won't be able to drive in, but there's space for a campervan to park just before the barrier and you'd still be out of the way. Plenty of space for many freestanding tents in the main area. A bit noisy as there is some kind of industry going on not far away but noone around and a really beautiful private spot for the night.

August 7th, 2020 Woodland wild camp for cyclists

Nice area of woodland just off the cycle route, follow one of the dirt roads off the path and it'll lead into the woods. Well hidden, plenty of places to pitch a tent. There is quite a bit of car noise from the nearby roads but not enough to be a bother.

July 27th, 2020 Picnic/BBQ area with hut

Amazing spot with space for 3 barbecues, lots of benches and a sturdy hut with two large benches and seating inside. There's a fountain for water, plenty of firewood and the views are spectacular. No vehicle access but you could park not too far away. There's space for freestanding tents, and woodland just behind it where you could also camp if you wanted somewhere more hidden. I just slept inside the hut on top of one of the tables. Very quiet from the evening, no one around. Great spot!

July 25th, 2020 Wild camp by the river

Nice spot to pitch a tent in the woods beside the river. Access from a path leading down, there are enough flat spots to pitch a few tents. Very quiet - you're visible from the pathway above but very few people use it and nobody disturbed me. No vehicle access to this one but there are a few places a van could park/camp slightly further south along the river.

July 23rd, 2020 Basic campsite

Simple campsite with only very basic facilities but spectacular views up to the glacier. 6 francs for tent camping. Note that if you'd rather wild camp there are plenty of places just a little further down this road to the south.

July 21st, 2020 Stealth camp in the woods

It's really hard to find a hidden spot to pitch a tent around Chamonix as all the woodland has many paths running through and there are so many people around. The best place I could find was this one, tucked away in the trees. Not very far from the path, but as long as your tent is a fairly well camouflaged colour (green being ideal) you're pretty much invisible. Only space for one small tent here though, and it's pretty tight.

July 21st, 2020 Wild camping next to the gravel works

Maybe things were different a few years ago but in 2020 this spot is useless for a tent camper - people all over the place and lots of paths around this area so nowhere to hide. You will have to go a bit further into the forest and find a place to hide in the trees (see other wild camp spot marked).

July 20th, 2020 By the river

If you follow the steep dirt road downhill off the road you'll come to a nice old stone bridge across the river. Just on the other side is a flattish area where you could set up a couple of tents, or you could also pitch on the bridge itself (plenty of rocks around to weigh down your tent). Quiet spot, I left early as there's a work camp nearby but I doubt anyone would disturb you. Decent place for a cyclist as camping options are very limited in this area. I would NOT recommend driving down here in a car or van unless you have 4 wheel drive as its very steep and slippery - you might have a job getting back out again!

July 15th, 2020 Aire camping car de l'étang

Really nice free camping spot with a nice view over many vineyards. Space for 14 vans, and there's a grassy section with benches nearby so you could comfortably set up a tent here too.

March 8th, 2020 Border Crossing - Paso El León

Official border crossing leading through to Cochamo in Chile, only possible on foot or with a horse. I was scouting this route to potentially bikepack and this trail would be absolutely miserable with a bicycle - forget about it (60km of hike-a-bike through a steep muddy hell). The trail leads through the Cochamo Valley and is around 60km, and much of it is in very bad condition - extremely muddy and slow going. Expect it to take longer than you'd think, it's not an easy hike. The border itself is very beautiful, but most of the trail isn't really interesting as you're almost always covered by trees and don't see much, so I wouldn't really recommend it to be honest.

March 7th, 2020 Refugio El Arco

Simple refugio with space for plenty of people on the floor and a big firepit in the centre. Pit toilet around the back. Nothing fancy, but would be a great escape from bad weather. I didn't stay the night, just stopped for lunch.

Note for anyone going over the border at Paso El León: much of this trail is currently EXTREMELY wet and muddy, so although it's an otherwise easy route it takes quite a bit longer than you'd expect. Although Cochamo is spectacular in general, the trail is also not very exciting to hike as you're almost always under tree canopy and therefore don't see much. I was scouting this route to potentially bikepack it, but it definitely would not be any fun at all for that purpose.

March 4th, 2020 Casa Perla + Camping

Nice enough place, still 7000pppn for camping in the small garden, including a breakfast of bread, jams/honey with tea or coffee. Decent WiFi, and the family were friendly. The main negative for camping is that there are a lot of dogs around who barked through the night. I'm used to this so it didn't bother me, but for light sleepers it could be an issue.

February 23rd, 2020 Hidden place

Fantastic spot, enough space for several tents and the track leading in has actually now been widened into a doubletrack, so you could even drive a car or small van in.

February 21st, 2020 Camping Refugio Patagónico

Nice campsite, friendly people and a nice vibe. Still 400pppn. Bathrooms aren't great but the showers were nice and hot. Wi-Fi was extremely slow.

February 19th, 2020 North entrance of park los Alerces

Really nice free campsite near the park entrance. Well protected, and the views over the lake are beautiful. The lake water is drinkable, no filtering needed.

February 18th, 2020 Parque Nacional Los Alerces – Quebrada Del Leon (FREE)

Lovely free campsite by the lake, lots of nice spots and plenty of firewood around. The lake water is safe to drink.

February 18th, 2020 Riverside Camping

Lovely spot just under a bridge next to a small river, you could camp directly under the bridge or there are spots to the sides very well sheltered by trees. All spots are hidden from the road. A small track just off the road to the north side of the bridge leads down. There were a few firepits around. Plenty of space for multiple tents or vehicles, and this road is very quiet so it's a nice relaxed spot.

February 16th, 2020 Amigo Patagon

Nice little campsite, price is 5000pppn which is maybe a little steep as there is no WiFi or kitchen/cooking facilities. Shower was nice and hot though. Very friendly staff and nice vibe.

February 12th, 2020 Café Sweet Patagonia

Lovely place, was 1800 for a delicious meat empanada. The very nice lady there also let me use the WiFi, which was pretty fast.

February 12th, 2020 Great wild camping under the bridge

Nice spot, I was there in terrible weather and the space under the bridge was a good way to get out of the rain, though be aware that if its windy (as it was with me) you still might need to put up your tent as the rain can blow in sideways. Be aware that there are some old nails around on the ground, so be careful and make sure you check the ground first.

February 4th, 2020 Lovely riverside wild camp

Great spot. Hidden from the road with good weather protection from trees and gorgeous scenery - one spot in particular has 'sleeping bag' views out across the whole valley right from your tent. Very quiet, this road has almost no traffic. There is space for plenty of tents, ideal for cyclists but you could also drive in as there is a track leading down to the river.

February 2nd, 2020 River sound campspot

Really nice spot as described, plenty of space for several tents which are mostly concealed from the road. Fire pit, and it was generally clean. Recommended!

January 28th, 2020 Great camp for cyclists and hikers only

Really lovely quiet spot, no views but plenty of dead wood around for a campfire and very peaceful. Definitely recommended.

January 28th, 2020 Camping El Risquero

Nice place, nice people. We just stopped for lunch, it was 5000 for coffee and bread with salami, ham, cheese, butter and marmalade. Good food, the camping looked nice and bathrooms were clean.
