January 8th, 2015 Pemex #6678 Villa Hildago

North of Villa Hidalgo, this Pemex is super quiet, has a large back area for overnight vehicles to park, off the main road and free!

November 19th, 2014 Playa Zipolite

This is a beach public access driveway that you can camp on. Talk to owner of restaurant Felipa, nice older Mexican woman. Restaurant is to the right when facing the beach. Charges 60 pesos/ night, has toilet you can use. No other amenities. And she never has change so pay exact. Food is good, but pricey for local food. Snug fit for us (we are huge) but back doors open to the ocean, which makes everything amazing. Current rough on entire beach but ok if you stay close to the shore. My description doesn't do it justice but it's the only place in Zipolite where you can park right on the beach. Stayed here for 2 weeks in February and again now on our drive north.

November 7th, 2014 Turista Police Car Park

Upon entry, you are told there is a 5 day max stay BUT we have stayed longer (5+ weeks) with permission. Ask the boss first and offer to buy thjngs for the property--footballs, lightbulbs, Clorox, buckets.... They want long term campers to offer to help out and buy items instead of them asking for things. Also, there is an open wifi network you can pick up with an extender in the back of the property.

September 21st, 2014 Finca CaƱas Castilla

Charged us $5 just to park, not using their electric or bathrooms. They have wifi now (it's slow) AND you can pay the $7 exit tax here if you are going to Nicaragua after your stay. FYI, they have 2 huge dogs that may not get along with other dogs. We kept our dogs away because theirs were aggressive and know their Great Dane has attacked another traveler's dog.

September 17th, 2014 Playa Pavones

Flat grassy spot right next to the beach and "coastal" road that is rarely used. Very quiet. Very scenic. Big rocks in the water so not ideal for swimming but during low tide you can walk all the way down the beach to the town center. Nice breeze. Locals say it's the best camping spot in the area.

September 15th, 2014 Happy Pet Vet

Dr Sam and Dr Patricia are an excellent husband and wife team, full service vets. English speaking. Inexpensive. They have dog food and other supplies. CLOSED SUNDAYS! 775 0501. Cells: 6948 1475, 6948 1476.

September 3rd, 2014 Playa Venao

Public access grass and sand lot right on the ocean. Quiet surfing beach with a few restaurants around. Could probably get wifi from one of them with the extender but we didn't try.

September 1st, 2014 Playa Albina Grande

Beach at the end of the paved road. Flat circular grass and sand area to park on, nice calm beach. No amenities out here. Private home to the left on the beach.

August 31st, 2014 Playa Las Lajas

Not many places to boondock in this small beach community but parked here at the end of the road next to the beach/garbage cans/broke down part of house. Quiet and safe. Beach is ok, somewhat dirty, but lots of islands around to explore by kayak, fresh seafood, surfing, snorkel and scuba trips.

August 28th, 2014 Nelly's Beach Bar

Still a great spot! Grassy flat areas to park next to the ocean. Palapas set up for the weekend influx maybe but pretty quiet during the week. Lots of beach access to park on. Great shelling along the beach

August 24th, 2014 Boquete River

Flat gravel area off the main road across from a hotel. The river that runs around town is right here. Nice peaceful spot close to town that's free!

August 23rd, 2014 Cangilones de Gualaca

Natural canyon and river you can swim in. There are some flat surfaces (grass and pavement) at the top of the canyon to park on. We stayed overnight and no one was out here. The next morning we jumped off the canyon into the water and swam for hours until others arrived. FREE!

August 21st, 2014 Water Taxi Parking

Cheapest option for visiting Bocas islands. Taxis run from 6-6. FYI they charged us $5/day to park because we are so large.

July 30th, 2014 Informal campsite

Best place to park to check out Montezuma! Close walk to center of town. Spot is off the main road through the center on a large flat grass/sand clearing right next to the ocean. Paid guy who house is next door 1000 just to keep an eye on the truck. He said he has an extension cord if electricity is needed. Will probably charge more though. Tent campers also along the beach.

July 27th, 2014 Playa Santa Teresa

Public beach access dirt road off the main highway. Long strip of parking next to the ocean. Pizza place on the corner and some vendors during the day. Public shower next to pizza place. Free!

June 7th, 2014 Olivia's Playground

Wide open space right on the lake with view of volcano and surrounding mountains. Short drive off main road on a dirt road beneath trees that opens up to a big clearing with free range parking. No one around. Best boondocking on Lake Arenal so far because so remote, right on the lake and cool breeze. Our dogs loved running around here.

June 5th, 2014 Free Hot Springs

Toby's description doesn't do this place justice. We've been to the pay springs and this one BY FAR is more spectacular. And free!!! You are literally bathing in nature. Gorgeous natural rainforest all around you while relaxing in cascading pools. Once you go down the main path from the highway, pools to the left and right. Apparently people come at night bc candles are everywhere. A must visit!!!

May 29th, 2014 Tropigas

Filled propane BUT you can't pay here. They fill your propane, keep the tank and you have to go back into town to a bank to pay. When you return with proof you paid, you get your filled tank. Stupid. We complained enough that one of the Tropigas workers took our money to the bank to pay for us. Standard fill up is 224C

May 23rd, 2014 Red Gate next to Monkey Hut

Miguel manages this lakefront property. There is no sign but the entrance is a red gate off the main road. Yell "Miguel" at the gate or ask the neighbors to track him down but he is on the property from 9-4. Plenty of space down driveway and at the bottom where the lake is to park/ camp. Private lake area to yourself. Property has rental rooms w a/c but they look gross. There is a bathroom you can use. Right next to Monkey Bar (walkway near lake) so you can eat next door. Using wifi from Monkey Bar with extender (good signal). Paying 100 cordoba/ night to park.
