April 30th, 2018 Cracker Barrel in Calvert city

Convenient overnight spot close to the highway but rather quiet at night. A few km from the Kentucky dam, a water power plant where you can park to enjoy the view.

April 27th, 2018 Picnic area on SH 43

In this nice shaddy picnic area, a sign says camping is allowed for less than 24 h. Not right by the road but close so a bit noisy in the evening and quiet at night.

April 27th, 2018 Street along a park with playground

Good place to overnight in a very quiet little town, with playground and picnic tables. We spent the evening in the big city park (see other overlander spot) which is nice too with playgrounds, river, free tennis courts, trails to run, bbq, water, electricity and moved downtown as the big park closes at 11:45 pm.

April 26th, 2018 Texas Travel Information Center Laredo

Very convenient and nice rest area. Wifi 24/24 at the entrance door. Restroom and water fountain 24/24 too. The little parking on the east side is less noisy (but closer to train track...)

April 24th, 2018 Matehuala zocalo del pueblo

We slept a night here in front of the public library and right by the plaza (tacos, etc). Busy car traffic in the evening but very quiet at night. In the past we also spent a night in the walmart parking lot at the north entrance of the city. Ok too but not as central.

April 18th, 2018 Puente del Dios

Great spot to enjoy a day among waterfalls and nature ! Don’t miss to enter the cave in Puente de dios. No vendors inside so make sure you take enough water and food as you’ll be far from your car. Plus good water shoes. Entrance is 40 p/ adult, 25 / kid 4 to 10. Lifevest mandatory for puente de dios. Renting available inside and outside (we paid 20p each). We didn’t find any « warm water » as mentioned in the first comment ; it was rather refreshing ;-).

April 16th, 2018 Mex 70

We hadn’t seen a gaz station for a while and needed to refill so we add this location in case it might help others ;-)

April 10th, 2018 Gaz express Alvarado

Close to Alvarado. Promo Price was 7,35 a liter in april 2018

April 10th, 2018 Alvarado malecon

A quiet and nice spot on the malecon, right by the water. 2 min walk from the beautiful plaza where we found free wifi. Also right by 2 modern playgrounds and an Italian coffee shop.

April 9th, 2018 Access to Los Organos

To access Los Organos, take the costal road that goes through Nueva Victoria. The inland road shown on overlander doesn’t exist :-)

April 9th, 2018 Campground Cascada Escondida

We spent a great week with this lovely family, living a truly mexican experience and discovering the landscapes around! The spot itself is very nice with waterfalls and natural pools, all surounded by trees, plants and flowers. Closeby are mountains on one side and beaches on the other, plus many rivers and waterfalls. Polo is always pleased to show you around (for free !) and Denyse has always a typical food on the fire ready to share. Our daughter loved playing with their girls, the dogs and chickens. There is no charge for camping if you eat there (family restaurant - low price food). There are cabins to rent. We’ll be back ! (Note : no cell reception in the whole area but you can buy cheap wifi access in the village).

April 9th, 2018 Alvarado beach

Very long beach with hills in the background westside. Good spot to sleep in the open parking (hard sand / rocky) right on the beach. Close to the Marines so should be safe. We had to go downtown so we slept on the malecon instead.

April 7th, 2018 Shady, grassy seashore camp

It’s an official campground (playa caracol) during holidays. Very nice place with both sea waves and a quiet small river so perfect for small kids too. Good shade and lot of space to park flat right in front the water. During semana santa 2018 prices were 30 p / car for entrance plus 100 / car for camping. Worth it !

March 27th, 2018 Cascada Salto de Ixtagapa

A nice place to refresh in the river only 2 km from mex 180. Large access to the water and falls which makes it feel not crowded even during semana santa. Several food kiosks at that time. Nice palapas and many trees for shade. Tyroliennes and places to jump. Entrance 20 p/adult and the owner let us camp for free along the river. No telcel reception.

March 20th, 2018 Free cenote Usil

Nice small semi opened cenote. Free access. At the end of the dirt road, about 2 km north of Cenotillo. Easy to reach.

March 19th, 2018 Agua purificada

Autorefill 24 h. 7 pesos el garrafon de 19 litros

March 19th, 2018 Cenote Acancun Azul (+informal campsite)

Very nice small 3/4 closed cenote, very clear water, nice jump. We paid 80 p for 2 adults and a 5 yo. A welcome fresh stop in the middle of very hot nowhere. Ok to sleep in the parking. Ask nice owner Turin. He offered a horse ride too.

March 19th, 2018 Cocina Doña Tati

Very good and simple restaurant loved by mexicans as much as us ! You choose your fishes freshly brought by fishermen and they fry them for you (150 p / kg). You built your own tacos with the delicious tortillas. They also have ceviche and other things. Nice shaddy area outside. Also takeaway. Check the schedule on their fb page.

March 18th, 2018 Flamingo-Lagoon Rio Lagartos-Cuyo

Very nice indeed ! We picked a spot just a bit further this one. Good area for biking among the salt lagoons. Only a few flamingoes seen in 3 days that mid march. Beautiful sunrise and sunset on the water. No mosquitos cause windy (which makes the temperature confortable night and day). A guide passing by bewared us about a crocodile living in the lagoon (in which the kids were playing...).

March 15th, 2018 Cenote Oxman

A great cenote with very few people ! Also a swimming pool, restaurant, showers, wifi, many iguanas, etc. Everything very well maintained. We loved our day there ! See more details in the camping description.

March 12th, 2018 Chedraui parking lot

Good quiet overnight stop. Supermarket opened 7 am to 11 pm.

March 11th, 2018 Mahahual

We spent 3 nights in the parking lot right north of the lighthouse and then moved +/- 500 m further north for 2 more nights. Second place is very quiet. None has a real sand beach but there is a sand area (free access) on the other side of the lighthouse. We had very nice snorkeling from the shore as you quickly get to the coral reef. If you go past the reef, it gets great with dozens of different colored fishes, big rays and sometimes turtles. We also enjoyed riding the malecon and further by bike and even had a fire. No mosquitos when we were there but lots of seagrass that came with a terrible smell in some areas (but not in the camping spots). Cool, safe and free spot ! Telcel 4G.

March 11th, 2018 Balneario Síljil noh há

Very nice and clean place to enjoy swimming with little fishes, jumping from the decks, kayaking (boats available), picnicking under nice palapas. There are also trails for hiking and biking (probably short - we didn’t try them). Camping is only 50 p / vehicule if hou stay on the (not so) further parking. Road access is rough but short. No Telcel signal when we were there.

March 5th, 2018 Balneario Ejidal Buenavista

Beautiful place but full of trash / broken glass from the week end and nobody was taking care of them. Restrooms / showers very dirty too. Lack of maintenance in general. The lady asked 200, we bargained at 150 and stayed one night. She refused to go down to 100 for the next night. We headed further.

March 3rd, 2018 Balneario magico bacalar (Camping Bacalar)

Day use only is 15 p/p. Extra fee of 30 p/p for the 2 big slides and 4 persons are needed so that they open them for one hour. Watch out : they are made in mexican style (they are fast and they hurt a bit). Several platforms on the water. Shady areas. Cool spot fir the price !
