May 23rd, 2018 Immigration and Customs Ecuador and Colombia

Coming from Colombia (Mocoa) to Ecuador on May 23, 2018. The drive is 4.5 hours from Mocoa. Average speed of 30 MPH. 90% of the road is paved and decent. No 4x4 needed. See iO posting for road conditions and more details regarding the drive.

Whole process took 30 minutes. No queue, no problems. Check out of Colombia = 30 seconds to get exit stamp. Entry stamp and immigration paper for Ecuador = 2 minutes.

Aduana process into Ecuador = 25 minutes. Officer entered all vehicle info into computer, asked for copies of passport w/entry stamp, title and drivers license. He printed TIP, I signed it, he said “Listo!” And we were gone!

Fastest border crossing yet!

Beautiful property with wide open spaces for all size camping rigs. Hotel, restaurant, hiking trails, swimming pool (river water), kids playground, friendly staff. There is a large pond fed by local springs that has picnic area, wildlife (peacocks, macaws, ducks, geese, fish). Trails are maintained, bathrooms are super clean, showers are ICE cold. Electricity available for camping. 24 hour security, guard gated entrance. Quiet area definitely worth a few nights. 40 minutes north of Bucaramanga. 25k per person to camp. WiFi in restaurant is fast. This place is really awesome.

Brand new hotel with nice rooms, pool, private/guard gated parking, restaurant, breakfast included in price. Super safe place with nice, friendly staff.

It's a 14,000 COP Uber ride from airport to the neighborhood. Driver will drop you at front guard gate.

This is a great safe place to unwind/wait for shipping to/from Panama! FYI- there is a Ford car dealership across street if you need any auto repairs/help.

April 2nd, 2018 DIJ Vehicle Inspection

Showed up at 7:45am. Went inside, checked in and got #14. Waited outside for 35 minutes. Inspection took 30 seconds.

FYI- they wouldn't let me in the building with shorts on (even though they let my buddy in with shorts). Have a pair of pants handy in case they hassle you...... the guy that told me "no shorts" turned around and took a pee in the middle of the parking lot so apparently dress code is more important than using a proper toilet.

April 2nd, 2018 Part 1 - DIJ Vehicle Inspection for Exporting Vehicle

Showed up at 1:45. Got checked in and then had to wait 2 hours to get inspection papers. They spelled my name wrong so had to wait another 20 minutes.

March 12th, 2018 Leiza's Parking

Safe parking lot 50 meters from water taxis to Bocas. The lot is very secure and the owner has 5 Rottweilers that stand guard at night. Leiza checked us in with a smile and was very helpful. $3 per day fee. There were at least 25 other cars in the lot and they suggest emailing ahead for a reservation in busy season.

March 8th, 2018 La Estrello Del Pacifico Cabanas y Camping

Omg!! We are here right now and loving it. A raw cabin with private toilet and shower on the beach! Cozy bed! We are staying 6 nights so they reduced the 35.00/ night to 25.00/night. Adorable and the beach....miles of flat gorgeous beach with no people. What a beautiful find! No wifi but we walked 10 minutes to the right and found a liquid bar with fast wifi. Camping, vehicle parking, cabins....this place we highly recommend for the overlanders

January 19th, 2018 Pacific Fast Lube

This car repair shop is run by a local Costa Rican (Mauricio) and his business partner is a Canadian (Johnny) who had a car shop in Canada for 30 years. Johnny inspects all the work done by his mechanics. These guys got the parts I needed from San José the next day and completed the work quickly and professionally. I had tie rods, bushings, brake rotors and an alignment for $250. It's definitely worth it to make the trip to Jaco to have Johnny look at your rig and let you know what he can do for you. Everyone in town recommended him to me. Johnny, Mauricio and the clerks all speak English.

December 7th, 2017 Ola Verde Hotel

Great beachfront hotel in Popoyo. Clean rooms, AC, safe parking onsite. Chill lounge area, little bar/restaurant. Local fruit/veggie truck comes daily if you want to fix your own food. Awesome, vacant beach with multiple surf breaks and NO people around when we were there. This is a place you don't want to tell people about so it stays low key and non-touristy.

The last 20 miles in from Granada is dirt road but not bad. Crossed a few streams but mostly smooth dirt.

November 30th, 2017 Papaya Lodge

Brand new secluded jungle lodge just off the beach near El Cuco in Playa Las Flores. Paid $25 for private cabana w bathroom. Little Restaurant/bar on site. Secure onsite parking with locked gate & security. Swimming pool, 2 story lounge area with hammocks. 3 minute walk to secluded beach with no people and a small surf break. It's about a 10 minute drive from the town on a decent dirt road. You can walk on the beach to town at low tide in 15 minutes. just past Las Flores resort. This is a sister property to Papaya Lodge in El Tunco. We stayed there also and it was great.

November 28th, 2017 Hacienda Vieja, Ciudad Pedro de Alvarado, Guatemala to La Hachadura, El Salvador

Pretty easy to get all TIP paperwork done. Some challenges with the form (Spanish only) but the officer helped get it done. FYI- we did not receive any paperwork/stamps or receipts at immigration. We had traffic jam once we passed through because the border town was paving the main road and it was down to one lane road. FYI- the road to El Tunco from here is pretty good and took us about 2 hours.

November 28th, 2017 Border Guatemala n Alvarado El Salvador

Same experience as others. Tons of semi-trucks crossing here. You have to pass them all to get to the front or you will be delayed for hours. Immigration and cancelling TIP was easy. You can make copies of documents across the street from immigration. We had an hour and a half wait to cross border due to truck traffic.

November 22nd, 2017 Pizza Más

A little family owned pizza joint that is awesome! Hand made dough, specialty pizzas, cold beer! Unassuming little place that brought home the goods with their fresh ingredients and great service. It's near the Santiago market (1 block west).

October 18th, 2017 Hotel La Estrella

Hotel, wifi, hot water, secure inside garage parking for bikes, cars, vans and SUVs. Not large enough for bigger rigs. Views of the lake and volcano from most rooms. Walking distance to public dock for boats to other towns on the lake. It's next to the city park so sounds of children playing until around 9pm. Not too much English spoken but they try hard to accommodate. Super nice people! 170 for 1 person, 250-300 double.

October 16th, 2017 Hotel Silani

Guesthouse right on the shore of Lake Atitlan with incredible views of Lake and volcanos. Rooms are basic cabins, one tree house and a cool outdoor shared bathroom. No wifi but plenty in town. Parked on street in front of property. Owner said pay parking available from neighbors with gated lot. Cars, vans, bikes only. Located at the end of a dead end street. 250q for 2 people. Owner speaks English. This town is really laid back, hippie, spiritual, yoga vibe. The drive in is straight downhill for 4K. A million potholes but worth the view and vibe if you make it.
