No one has updated these pins in a while, yet the question about vehicle insurance south of Mexico comes up at least once a week on Facebook, so I figured I would go back and update this pin with our experience and knowledge at this point.

Though it is not required by law or at traffic stops in Guatemala, we bought 3rd party liability for our US plated truck from the Todo Riesgo office in Flores in April of 2023. Other travellers have bought it at the office in Guatemala City or by email from one of these two people: [email protected] [email protected]

Todo Riesgo says their coverage is valid for the C-4 countries + Costa Rica. You will however be required to buy separate in-country vehicle insurance in order to enter Costa Rica. For Nicaragua, stories vary on whether or not  the Guatemalan Todo Riesgo insurance is accepted at traffic stops. We preferred to avoid any excess hastle from Nicaraguan authorities, to we bought the $12 in-country insurance at the border there. You may find this helpful in determining what length of time to buy Todo Riesgo insurance for.

As the comments below indicate, this is 3rd party liability that covers the other person in case of an accident. Coverages are relatively low compared to US/European standards. However, if you are in an accident with major damage or injury, and you are unable to resolve the damages with the cash you carry with you, you are likely to be detained and your car impounded until damages are assigned and paid in full. This insurance and the local contacts it comes with hopefully will assist in resolving that unpleasant situation more quickly, and for that we found the peace of mind worth the cost.

Finally, many people apparently make it to southern Mexico without realizing that comprehensive/collision/theft insurance for the vehicle is very difficult to obtain and very expensive for Central and South America. The vast majority of vehicle travellers go without this type of insurance heading south. Don’t take anything south of the border you can't afford to walk away from!

Unfortunately haven't found a better alternative yet, the seem to be some US based insurances for Central America (e.g. https://www.mxici.com/CSAVI/), but only for US or Canadian cars and not older than 20 years...

Report Check-In

This insurance is basically worthless if you read the details. It says 130.000Q total sum, but it's actually only 20.000Q (about 2500 USD) per accident. I asked the lady in the office about it and she confirmed that this is indeed the case, but this is the only one they would offer for cars with foreign plates.

So the only reason to get this insurance is to say that you have insurance (e.g. Nicaragua) or if you bumped into someone slightly. In real accidents you're still f*cked.

Still a good place to go. 612Q for 90 days third party insurance for whole of Central America. Max amount is 130.000Q.

229Q for 15 days, for a third party insurance

Report Check-In

This place closes at 5pm and bank BAM next door had a long queue. The lady here wouldn't accept US dollars but changed her mind later.

Report Check-In

We got insurance for 30 days for 305q. Only covers liability (not your vehicle) up to 130,000q. Also good for El Salvador and Honduras. Took about 15 minutes.

Report Check-In

Quoted same prices as listed below. However...take note: this does NOT protect your vehicle! It is only to protect yourself against third parties...i.e. it will only pay for damage or injury you caused to third party!!! Up to 130,000Q. We were told it is good through Costa Rica, but he said they may not accept it at Costa Rica border...even though the insurance company will cover it.

Was told in Nicaragua that it wasn’t good...but this was from an insurance company at the entrance ...not the aduana. It definitely was not accepted in Costa Rica.

Place is now called "todo riesgo". Prices have not changed, still paid Q.305 for a month. Super easy, friendly and quick.

Report Check-In

closed on saturday and sunday.
luckily it isn't mandatory

Report Check-In

Price as mentioned by others, no change.
Very straightforward.
They made it clear it works in Guatemala, Honduras and Salvador, but not Nicaragua and Costa Rica. My understanding is that those countries have their own mandatory liability policies so the commercial one from Guatemala would not be enough to satisfy the border officials.

Nous nous sommes rendus sur place, ils n’assurent pas de véhicules, juste les personnes (assurance civile).

Report Check-In

Update: Although the policy says that it covers Costa Rica, the insurance was not accepted by Costa Rican Aduana.
We signed 2 months of insurance in Guatemala assuming it would cover Costa Rica as well. We now had to buy another 3 months (minimum period) for USD 41.

Says G&T on outside.
229 quetzal for 15 days
305 for 30
458 for 60
611 for 90

In Nicaragua it seems like $12 one month insurance is mandatory and that police require their insurance if that factors in to how long you want to buy here.

Report Check-In

We were controlled in Nicaragua, and police said that this insurance were good ;)

Report Check-In

Report Check-In

costa rica does not accept this insurance, had tp buy a new one at zhe boarder. all other countries were fine except costa riva

Report Check-In

Attention: The insurance seems to be valid in Guatemala and El Salvador. But the police did not accept it in Nicaragua and Costa Rica. We had to buy their mandatory insurances at the border.

Report Check-In
