There is a lot of construction at the port so if you are there to only get a TIP, park outside on the street and walk in, the Banjercito employee was incredibly friendly and the whole process took only 20 mins.

We took the TMC ferry (2 people, dog and Promaster van) and it was fairly straightforward.

We filmed the process here:

1. Got our TIP for 10 years at the Banjercito office (1125 pesos, took credit). Park outside the blue fence and walk in. Take your Passport and Vehicle Title.
2. Make a reservation at the TMC office which is just passed the inspection point.
3. Return on the day of boarding a few hours before (we went at 3pm and it was quiet).
4. Go through inspection point - show passport and TIP.
5. Get weighed (210 pesos, cash) and measured - these determine the ticket price. We have a Ram Promaster and our tickets were 7200 pesos for van + driver + extra person (paid with credit).
6. Go to office where you made the reservation and get actual ticket.
7. Loop around to the water side and wait next to the ferry to be boarded. We were told in the office the extra person would need to walk on.
We ignored this and no one at the ferry cared there was a 2nd passenger while we boarded.
8. Get dinner and Enjoy the ride!

Parking didn’t seem to want to let us park inside the parking lot with our 10m rig… we parked in an unofficial parking spot. All good. Photocopies went excellent, they will print from email for you even. He didn’t charge me. The Banjercito was easy to find and fast service. We got alot of pushback on our documentation, so I had to keep getting more and more printed out like a bill of sale… we were there for 3 hours trying to get our TIP. Heads up they close at 3pm, so arrive plenty before. If you have all your documentation straightforward and by the book, it shouldn’t take too long really.

Just a little tip here, if the only thing you want is getting your TIP done you can park in the street right beside the entrance. That way you don't have to mess around getting out!

Baja ferry - la Paz to mazatlan with partner and dog🐕 . Customs were doing a thorough job of going through all cars . . . We were pulled aside and spent 10 minutes waiting for our agent to return with our tvip . She had us open the back hatch of our truck - loaded with camping gear and looked inside the cab. . . Petted the dog and that was it. Off you go. . .

We paid roughly 9000 pesos for 2 persons with Baja ferries to Mazatlan. Crazy process and expensive but it works ..

What a hectic process… I’d recommend doing this on the day of travel BUT get there early.. this process to get TIP alone took 3 hours. We just went there a few days before travel to get TIP but getting out of the port is quite the process.

Couldn’t find the turn in for the parking lot, got directed the wrong way. Finally found it. Had to pay to park.

Spoke to the Banjercito woman who was very nice but didn’t speak much English. Had to photo copy our passport, drivers license, Canadian vehicle insurance, Mexico insurance, abs our FMM. Can get it all copies at the guy at the gate to the parking lot. Also charges for photocopies.

Then they said our truck and camper (3/4 ton truck and 1,000 lbs camper) were over weight and we’d have to get approval from customs next door. (Have to pay and leave the parking lot and go right next door.. the parking lot is open and it should be simple to just drive through but there are cones blocking the way so you need to leave through the entrance and fight traffic to go to the next entrance).

There is some confusion around weights and it really just depends on who you get. RV’s are fine but if you have a truck with a camper in the back of it apparently it can’t be over 7,700 lbs or else you can’t get TIP. Ours wouldn’t be over it but they seem to just look at the GVWR and not actually weigh your truck.
Luckily the customs guy we got was nice and gave us the stamp after arguing with the other customs woman who didn’t want to.

After some confusion as to why we were there.. we got his stamp and we had to go back to the Banjercito. The nice guy just told us to park our vehicle there and walk back otherwise we’d have to leave and go all the way around (which is a nightmare)

We brought our paper work to the Banjercito she stamped everything and we paid the fee and we were done!… so I thought.

Getting out of this place is a nightmare!
You can’t just turn around and leave the way you came in (since you just went through customs) we had to go follow trucks, then go to a weigh/pay station where 5 different people kept asking us where we were going but we just wanted to leave! We kept getting pointed in different directions, made wrong turns then had to talk to 3 more people who directed us back, then more people asking for us to pay for the ferry and us telling them we weren’t getting on the ferry.

Finally we found the exit! Only to have to go through a military checkpoint where they searched our vehicle because they thought we just came off the ferry. Then after that they want to disinfect your vehicle… again because they thought we just came off the ferry..

Overall.. quite the run around just to get this TIP.

IF YOUR IMMIGRATION CARD IS NOT STAMPED, YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO OBTAIN A TIP. I am having to get a flight out and come back just for the stamp. I also tried the immigration office downtown and the airport, no go. If you’re not stamped, make preparations now, trust me.

Update:
Hours here are MWF - 0700-1500, TR 0700-1800, Sat 0700-1500, and Sun 0830-1630

super easy. Guy at window spoke English pretty well. Had to get photo copies of VISA and car registration. We already had a copy of registration, but they specifically wanted a photo copy. We also got our passports copied again just in case the first photo copy wasn't okay.

It took us maybe 15 minutes? There was nobody in line on a Wednesday morning (around 8:50), but there were like five people after us. So, I think we were just lucky.

We didn't go through customs yet.

Turn left after the gate. Banjercito is on the right corner of the building. The guy in the parking lot toll booth will make copies for you.

did my tip a few days before taking the ferry as I wanted to check how things go before getting in a confusing hurry.

paid $56 for the tip + $200 for the deposit for my jeep YJ.

you can make photocopies at the parking entrance for a few pesos.

very nice agent and easy process.

basically the steps are :

1 get here and get your tip.

2 drive straight in front of of you when you exit the banjercito building to drive to the aduanas.

3 after the aduanas, get you ticket at the window you'd prefer.

Baja ferries is the touristy ferry

the other is the truck ferry. less expensive, food onboard.

Very easy going, TIP withing 10'. Preferably speak some Spanish.

You can only collect you TIP here for leaving TIP free Baja
I wanted to suspend my TIP and have my deposit returned upon entry to Baja but this can only be done at the borders.

Been today after our TIP got stolen. with passport or tourist visa and the vehicle identification number they can track your TIP and give you a verification document that you can take to the border when you leave the country. If your vehicle is anything different than a regular car let them know or they won't be able to find your TIP.

Quick and easy TIP (permiso de importacion temporal). To register you Need a tourist card, passport and vehicle registration all in the owners name, plus copies of each to leave at the office. Took about 30 minutes and there was no line when we arrived on a Friday at 12:30. As of march 10, 2017 the cost for the permit was $59 USD plus the $300 USD refundable deposit you get back once you check in at a Benjercito office when leaving Mexico. If you pay with a bank card it needs to be in the same name as the owner of the car.

The office is open Monday to Wednesday from 7am to 3pm, Thursday and Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8:30am to 3pm. The lady working there, Lisette, spoke fluent English and was very kind and explained everything. Once you're done you need to post the TIP sticker on your car visibly.

Directions: coming from La Paz, turn left once you pass the icon on the map and enter a walled off area. Turn left again and pass through another set of gates where it costs 28 pesos to park.

Boat tickets: The ticket office is in the blue building next door. Before you can buy your ticket you need to have your car weighed and pick up a document that you give at the ticket office. The weight of your vehicle determines the cost. You pay for 4 different things at the office: passenger tickets, cabin fare, and vehicle fare. For 2 people with a budget room and a loaded up SUV we paid 5400 pesos ($230 USD). We booked 5 days in advance as we were not sure of the boats fill up.

Good luck!
