Description

Another shout out for Cheikh.
He didn't only get me through this border "business class" for €20 - he also called ahead to the infamous Rosso border (Mauritania - Senegal) and had a guy there to meet me who looked after me just as brilliantly.
And when I got confused the next day about whether I had all the right documentation he was able to put my mind at rest.
Highly recommended.

Morocco to Mauritania:
easy border crossing. crossed without vehicle.
checked out of the Moroccan side without any issues and then started walking across to Mauritania. it's honestly quite far, but after about 20 minutes of walking a car drove past who offered us a free lift to the Mauritanian side.

my friend didn't have 55 euros to pay for the Mauritanian visa, so she had to pay in MAD.
ended up paying 650 mad which is about 60 euros.

Exchanged our last 100 dirham at 3.8 ouguiya/ mad, official exchange rate that day was 3.95

Also it's worth noting that here, and in Mauritania in general, people usually still talk about money using the old currency, which has an extra 0
So for instance if a taxi driver is saying a short ride will cost "deux milles" (2 thousand) he actually only means 200 ouguiya

We arrived at the Guergerat border, with our car, at 2:30pm (14h30).

We ate at the little restaurant just before the border. It was delicious by the way: fried chicken with a lemon sauce and some french fries.

We started the border crossing at 3pm (15h).

On the Moroccan side:
1. Officers check your passport and stamp it « out ». They also check your vehicle’s documents (not the insurance, but its registration document). There was no need for a CDP at all.
2. Then, officers make you wait in line to get your vehicle checked. We got our car checked by a dog (quite big). There was no scanner/X-Ray machine. Everything was done under some shade, which was a relief !
3. Officers then ask for your «Validity Card» (it is given to you when you enter Morocco with a vehicle). Unfortunately, we lost the card so we had to enter some building to have a new paper printed out/stamped so we could leave Morocco.
4. Officers check one last time your passport and your vehicle’s documents on your way out.

After the Moroccan side of the border, we crossed the so-called “no man’s land”: it was short, the road was a little bumpy and there were plenty of garbage everywhere.

Onto the Mauritanian side:
1. We entered a first building where an officer checked our passports and vehicle’s documents. No need again for a CPD.
2. Then we entered another building (Police building) where another officer checked our passports again and asked for our final destination.
3. Then, we got our car checked by another officer and his dog (quite big too).
4. After these first steps, the officer gave our passports to a “fixer/passeur”. We wanted to do everything on our own, but didn’t really have a choice.
5. Our fixer, Rabat, then got us our “passavant” for 100MAD (10€).
6. Then, we went to another big building where we got a note from an office that enabled us, at another office, to get our visas printed. The visas were 650MAD/person if you don’t carry euros, otherwise it is 55€/person.
7. Then we went back to the office that got us the note a little earlier to have our visas stamped.
8. In a final office, still in the same building, some officer made photocopies of your passports/visas.
9. The final step was getting some insurance for our car. Rabat, our facilitator, recommended CNA. We thus bought our insurance there: 311MAD (31€) for 10 days. We taught it was a bit expensive but didn’t want to risk buying our insurance in Nouadhibou with all the checkpoints leading to the city. Also, our car has 17 fiscal horsepower, so the insurance is a bit more expensive they said.

We didn’t buy our SIM card at the border, although many people there tried to sell us one. We thought the prices would be better in Nouadhibou, but turns out it was extremely hard to find a SIM provider in town. We ended up buying a SIM from a guy at a gas station: 2GB of data for 30 days for 700OUG (17€).

We did not change our last MAD into OUG at the border (but should have because we didn’t find any exchange office in Nouadhibou), but you can do so there, without any trouble.

For the Mauritanian border, we recommend you pay things in Euro (cheaper than in MAD).

We also think having a fixer/passeur is not necessary, everyone is friendly there and points you to the right building. Rabat was, however, very patient and queued like everyone else. He was also very friendly ! We paid him 100MAD and took his contact in case anyone is in need of help for future border crossings:

Overall, we left the Mauritanian border at 6:45pm (18h45). We felt very welcomed on the Mauritanian side, everyone was smiling, even officers !

will never understand why on earth people think they need a fixer for this border. Compared to the rest of the world, this is one of the easiest borders in more than 100 countries visited. Everything self explanatory, only nice and helpful people, most even speak English. Save the 20€ and invest it in a delicious local dinner in Morocco if you want to spend it.

Cheikhani supported us in managing the complicated border to get to Mauretania. He was very helpful and friendly and speaks also English fluently. (his WhatsApp number is +222 36 18 95 69)

First time for us to cross these borders. We contacted Cheikh and it was a very good choice! We were very happy because everything was going very fast and easy thanks to him. Cheikh is very friendly and professional. We do recommend him 200%! He did everything for us: formalities, visas, car insurance, internet, passe-avant… in 1 hour 30 minutes! Also he gave us tips for Sénégal border. Cost of service: 20€ ( 2 persons and camper truck) + visas 55€/ pers + insurance 20 days 75€

we wanted to do the paperwork at the border ourselves, but Cheikh came to save us. For 20.- Euro he took us through all the necessary offices at a very rapid pace. He is known there, so you can trust him with your passport and vehicle papers. Once at the Mauratanien border and you have parked, ask for Cheikh. You are in good hands.

Stop paying these guys for something that is free! These guys and all that chaos only exist because of people paying them. They aren't waiting in line but bribing the custom officers to be dealt first. Everybody else has to wait longer instead. The whole process is straightforward like on any other border in this world. There's absolutely no need to take one of these sneaky fixers for anything. I've hardly seen such a "border mess" anywhere else before.

We also can recommend Cheikh!!! He also organizes SIM cards, Money Exchange and car insurance! Just perfect! Thank you very much for your professional help!

How outrageous to be prepared early and waiting for the office to open to process the visa and for a parasite to come with 10 passports in his hand and skip the line. Many thanks to all those who are collaborators of corruption. I would like to know if in Europe they have the same ethical behaviors to bribe officers.

Crossed from Morocco to Mauritania. It took about three hours and a half 🫠 although we had a driver familiar with the place, who took us to Nouadhibou once we got our visas (no bus that day). We didn't pay any backshishs, it just took forever because everyone kept sending us to random offices so an officer could look at our passports and sometimes record (often wrongly) our names and stuff. Eventually we got our visas (55 euros, better to pay in euros than in dirhams because it's cheaper), had to wait another 30 minutes for a cop to stamp them (fixers kept coming in his office with piles of passports, and he only took the ones he felt like taking 🥲), and got out. The trick is just to be patient ^^.

Sheick got us in. Sheick got us out. He'll round the edges, wait in line for you, correct what needs to be corrected. You probably could do it all yourself but it's a lot more time, stress and energy we decided to save as the journey ain't over yet. 20€ is a great deal.

Highly recommend using Chechi here. It’s a very disorienting disorderly border. This chap zooms you through so he can get ready for another customer. It still takes time but all the stress is taken out and you don’t get ripped off. Highly recommend. Obtain his what’s app from previous post. Remember he is at the Mauritanian side after you go through Moroccan side.

Mauretania -> Morocco
German passports, car with CdP.

If you are used to borders it's no problem at all without a fixer. All officials were super friendly and showed us where to go. No harassment at all.

Mauretania side:
1. Building on the right side "Immigration" for passport stamp out
2. 100m further building on the left side "Douane" for the passavant stamp out into drivers passport.
3. Building right side just before exit gate for final check of the passports and registration in book.

Done in 30 min.
Drive the gravel pist to morocco side

Marocco side:
1. Register in book at the entrance gate
2. Safety check
3. Car examination on the right side. Takes pretty long. You get a DIN A5 paper called "fiche" from the examination officer
4. Passport stamp in on the left side. Window without any mark, impossible to find if you don't know where it is, but just ask for "Immigration" everybody will show you.
5. TIP: one building further from Immigration, left side just before the x-ray you get your TIP. It's an ID-card sized small paper with QR code.
6. X-ray
7. Final check of passports at the exit gate. You give your "examination fiche" and keep your TIP.

Finished! Marroco side took 3h, mainly because examination.

No money paid on both sides!

We left dakhla at 6 am and finally arrived in mauratiania 12 hours later so be prepared for a long day or even better sleep at the border the night before. Maroc side was very slow but simple enough.

Mauratiania side we crossed without a fixer, ignoring anyone without a uniform or badge, also we don't speak any french. Once crossing the bad road in no mans land we parked before the entrance to avoid parking fees that people try to charge and completed the process on foot. First we bought our visas in the second building on the left, 55 euros full page sticker. Then opposite to this building we entered an office and showed our passports with van document, he asked us a few questions then told us to head to the police which was the first building on the left when entering the area.

Then continued further in, dodging the people trying to sell items and their help, about 50 meters on the right we found a large black sliding door inside is where we can buy the passavant document for 100 dirhams. Continued along this road another 50 or so meters on the left we found the border police to stamp our passports, they will also photocopy the documents and ask for a whatsapp number.

After this we walked back to the entrance to collect our van and drove to the exit, we had a vague check with a dog, showing all officials our stamped visa and passavant document along the way. You can either buy your insurance at the exit of the border or, like us - drive 40 minutes to Nouadhibou for a cheaper deal at 'SAR Assurance' 750oug for 10 days.

Cheikh helped us through the whole process which looks very confusing to say the least. I guess you could do it alone but it would take more time, more energy and more money. 20€ is really not much if you consider the advantage of the treat.
We'll definitely ask for Chick help again.

one more recomnendation to use Sheik's services. Flawless and saved us a lot of hassle. Gave us a lot of good tips and contacts as well.

Report Check-In

Thanks to Sheik the boarder crossing was smooth. The exit from Marocco was tiring. They even made us take all our stuff out of the car to have it sniffed by their dog or make us tired. The Mauretanian side was easy then thanks to Sheik. So the 20 Euros are more than worth it
