This was the cheapest hostal we could find in Cartagena and it was just great. Max and his family are such nice people. It has become like a family after almost 3 weeks in this place. We needed to ship our bikes and bike-lover Max has the right contacts to do so. Cooked breakfast is basic but good with juice and coffee. You can also use the kitchen and the fridge. Cheap laundry service. we paid 60000 COP for two in a double room with bathroom. Cleaned daily so very tidy. Nice area too at walking distance from the beach and a 15 min taxi ride to the historic center. Shops and restaurants around at a fraction of the prices in the city center. We can't but highly recommend!

Gerardo is a great mechanic that helped us fix a few broken bolts from our pannier racks. He got the bolts out, tapped new threads and turned an alu bushing we lost somewhere in Africa. After having worked on the bikes for over an hour, he refused any payment. A golden mechanic with a golden heart! Welding, turning etc... is all possible here with free entertainment from the locals included! Amalfi itself is actually pretty nice as well.

August 25th, 2017 Econotrans

Shipped two bikes + gear and luggage in one half open crate to Montevideo for 2450 €. We took the bikes apart to make them as small as possible. 2 Husky 701 enduros + stuff in 1.9m3, 435 kg.
We were allowed to strap the bikes to the crate but they finished the cover as it has to be certified fumigated wood with stamps.

July 8th, 2017 Buffalo camp

No nice camping anymore here. No tents accepted anymore. Cheapest room at 5000 mtc 😲. Camping 5 km further down the road at a noisy truck stop for 400 mtc pppn. Same owner. We do NOT recommend.

June 1st, 2017 Rainbow River Lodge

prices have gone up to a whopping 140N $ per person for camping and 30 N $ for a beer. Watch out. There's better places at lower prices!

May 30th, 2017 River Dance Lodge

This is an amazing place to stay. We thought the price for camping was a.bit on the high side (150N$) until we saw the place. A beautiful view over the river, private bathroom with hot water etc... Dinner was delicious at 250N$. We even got a free breakfast. Memorable place...

May 26th, 2017 Northern Bikes & Quad

This is the place to get your bike repaired after crossing from the north. The first decent bike shop on your way down south. Duan & Johan are not only great bike mechanics, they are also really nice people. Had the valves of our bikes checked, new front tyres and chain + sprockets installed for a very reasonable price. They let us do some work on the bikes ourselves as well
. They can source parts really quick for any brand and are very professional. Just call them upfront at +264 811491263

April 9th, 2017 motel by pharmacy

This place is in wrong location - it is located at -1.87777, 11.04611

April 9th, 2017 Mont des Oliviers

Small, clean and quiet motel with very friendly staff. Just next to the Oilybia petrol station on the main road. A bit out of the center of Mouila. Running water limited due to the elevation so shower with buckets. 7000 Cfa for a room with fan.

April 8th, 2017 Auberge de la vallée

Motel in Ndjolé. 8000 cfa for a double room with fan, which is still a bit overpriced for what you get. Separate showers with toilet that looked clean in the evening, but horrible in the morning. You can take a room for 2h so that says enough I think: a bit noisy 😁. But it does the job.

April 5th, 2017 Hotel Sispen

Small basic hotel at 6000 cfa for a double room with shower and toilet. Friendly, easy going staff.

March 25th, 2017 Azi Motel

Nice place to stay. We got a 10000 cfa room at 5000 cfa. 1000 cfa tourist tax to be added. AC can be put on the generator in case of a power outage but you should ask at the reception.

March 19th, 2017 Auberge le Bonheur

Cheap little hostel, clean room with shower for 7000 cfa. Ideal for those crossing the border with Nigeria the next day.

March 16th, 2017 Ambassade De La Republique Democratique Du Congo

50000 cfa, 2 pics and a few hours waiting. That's all.

Our African visa page:

March 9th, 2017 Embassy of the Democratic Republic of Congo (Lome)

Be careful: the easy procedure for Congo RDC visa is over in Lomé. When we were there they told us it was pretty much impossible to get a visa here. It would take 3 weeks to get an answer, requires invitation etc and even then they said it is most probable it will be refused. They were forced go stop their little business by Kinshasa. Went to Cotonou instead: 2 pics, 50000cfa and same day delivery. We made an overview of our visa applications in Africa:

March 8th, 2017 Chez Alice

Alice is 84 years old now and we think she is absolutely great. She is just a really nice personality with lots of experience and a caring attitude towards her customers. The team of locals is nice as well and the compound itself is great. But unfortunately Alice's attitude isn't shared by her daughter and grandson. The daughter doesn't seem all too interested and the grandson doesn't really seem to care about the customers when arriving in the middle of the night with the car stereo volume high. We also didn't really like the baboon in captivity on the property and we think 6 dogs running around and leaving stuff on the parking lot is just a bit over the top. Food was good though and reasonably priced, but there were almost no customers around which made the huge barn like dining room feel empty. We stayed in one of the double rooms with ventilation and bathroom at 7000 CFA/ night.

This place is worth a stop if you are in Bamako. We stayed here for 2 weeks because Tom was unable to ride the bike with a broken foot and we couldn't have imagined a better place to stay. The team does a great job here. Phil is a great source of information about the city and Mali in general. We stayed in the dorm (4 beds, 2000/night). Lots of mosquitoes here though so better take precautions as malaria got Tom shortly after our stay here. Menu is great if you stay a few days and reasonably priced. Bar with cold drinks, milkshakes and diet coke 😁. Only downside is that most of the clients are UN personnel nowadays, but there's still travellers passing by so you'll probably meet some.

December 29th, 2016 Zebrabar

This place has everything to make it a worthwile stop after crossing the border from Mauritania. Nice views over the area from the tower, great view over the river, clean huts, campground, bar etc... But we have missed the soul here. We have missed the arhmosphere, we think food is so so for the price you're paying and in our opinion the owners are seriously lacking enthusiasm. Not a single smile, no connection whatsoever. We are not a fan unfortunately...

December 8th, 2016 Auberge Camping Borj Biramane

This remains one of the most memorable places of our RTW trip. We liked the place, the athmosphere and the entire team. Philippe is a great guy. you can't but feel sympathy for him. He did a great job selecting a great team of locals who all play traditional instruments. Music and entertainment are great here as well as the excellent kitchen. Clean place, good showers and nice environment. If you are looking for a bar, then this is the place to be. Prices are very reasonable.
